Shirley also tried the controversial ‘Vegetable Paradox’ diet which restricts the types of vegetables you can eat.

Followers of the diet try to avoid lectin-carbohydrate-binding proteins such as those found in beans, lentils or chickpeas, grains and nightshade vegetables – some of which like to grow in shady areas – such as tomatoes and peppers.
The theory, first advanced by the US doctor Steven Gundry, is that this lectin can cause weight gain and chronic disease – but there is little evidence to support this philosophy.
